| Kayleen, a young single woman who has been a teacher for three years, is a native of the North Shore. As an only child, staying close to her parents and extended family in the area she has always called home is very important to her. However, with the high cost of living locally, she was beginning to realize that that might not be possible.
She has been living with a roommate in a below-market-rent apartment in an old house that costs an arm and a leg to heat and has an occasional mouse problem. Her roommate has been unsure about how much longer she will remain in the area, and Kayleen knows she couldn’t afford the rent on her own. |

“You go to college and pick a career that’s supposed to be a good one, and still find it really challenging to be able to afford living here. Times have changed so much,” says Kayleen, who has been living paycheck to paycheck.
When the Superintendent in Hamilton, where Kayleen teaches kindergarten, shared an announcement about an affordable homeownership opportunity town, she jumped at the chance - and was selected.
“I’m just looking forward to some consistency. My rent isn’t going to be raised, I won’t have to find another roommate, and I won’t have to move any time soon. I’m even hoping my utilities might be a little lower!”
Kayleen is looking forward to greater financial security and believes the steps she is taking now will improve her future. Her mom is even breathing a sigh of relief knowing her daughter will be able to put down roots in the area.
Kayleen hopes to raise a family here someday. But in the meantime, is excited to have a place of her own, share this blessing with friends and family, and continue investing in her church and community. |

Women Build is volunteering to make a positive impact on a family's future. Empowering women to help other women overcome the barriers to homeownership. A day building, connecting, and creating lasting change. Join as an individual or team for peer to peer fundraising, then a day of building on a Tuesday or Friday in May (or one of our two special Saturdays). You'll receive weekly tips and inspiring stories to help you reach your goals with games and prizes for top fundraisers. Your build day will begin with hot coffee and snacks and a Women Build T-shirt, proceed to hands on construction lessons with lunch provided, and finish with a great sense of accomplishment from this rewarding experience. Happening Saturday, April 18 from 10am - 1pm in the back parking lot at the Habitat ReStore in Lawrence, this drive through donation drive is the Earth friendly way to get rid of home goods, small furniture pieces, tools, lamps, lawn and garden items, scrap metal, clothing, accessories, footwear, linens, bedding, small rugs, fabric and yarn, books, CDs, DVDs and videogames.
